Trail Information
The Ranipuram Trek unfolds in three scenic sections, accessible by private vehicles or by public transport with a short detour from the nearest bus stop 9km away. The trek offers a captivating journey through rugged terrain, verdant landscapes, and crisp mountain air, promising an unforgettable adventure for nature enthusiasts. 1
- The trail gradually ascends from the Forest checkpost to the First viewpoint, offering a leisurely introduction to the breathtaking vistas ahead.
- Embark on a scenic trek from the First viewpoint to the Forest watch house, immersing yourself in the captivating beauty of the surrounding wilderness along the way.
- The trail gently ascends from the Forest watch house to the summit of Ranipuram Peak, inviting adventurers to savor the gradual climb amidst the pristine natural surroundings.
Section 1: Forest Check post to First View Point
Trek Distance: 430 m
Trek Duration: 15 minutes
The journey kicks off at the forest checkpoint, where tickets priced at Rs 50 per person are required for entry. Setting foot into the trek, you’ll navigate a gentle incline amidst the verdant embrace of a tropical evergreen forest.
After a brief 10-minute trek, you’ll emerge onto a sprawling expanse of shola grassland. Keep moving forward for another 150 meters to reach the primary vantage point. Here, a makeshift structure awaits, offering refreshments like buttermilk and snacks, particularly during holidays.
To your left, the majestic mountain range belongs to the Talacauvery National Park in Coorg. To continue your ascent towards the Ranipuram peak, take a right turn from this juncture
Section 2: First View Point to the Forest Watch House
Trek Distance: 1.7 km
Trek Duration: 45 min
Once you’ve reached the viewpoint, veer right and descend about 200 meters into the forested area, where a metallic bench provides a perfect spot for a rest. Proceed through the wooded section until you encounter a slight ascent along the ridge, leading you into the next forested stretch. Traverse this part to reach an open area adorned with shola grasslands, just a 10-minute walk away, where you’ll find the forest watchhouse.
Perched atop a ridge at the forest watchhouse, you’ll be treated to stunning vistas on both sides. During rainy days, the forested section is enveloped in a mystical atmosphere, blanketed by thick fog. Adjacent to the forest watchtower, there’s a stall offering refreshments, including buttermilk and snacks, for a well-deserved break.
Section 3: Forest Watch House to Ranipuram Peak
Trek Distance: 330m
Trek Duration: 10min
Ascend another 100 meters from this point to reach Maduthamala Peak. Once there, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, with Ranipuram Peak directly ahead.
Alternatively, skip Maduthamala by veering left on the trail to head directly to Ranipuram Peak. Descend steeply for about 50 meters from this point, positioning yourself between Ranipuram and Maduthamala. Then, continue ascending for another 10 minutes through challenging rocky terrain to reach the summit of Ranipuram Peak. Exercise caution, especially during the rainy season when rocks may become slippery.For the descent, follow the same route used for the ascent, enjoying views of the expansive Talacauvery National Park along the way. Expect to spend around 45 minutes descending, as it’s mostly downhill.

By road: You can reach Ranipuram by taxi or car from Kannur Airport (2.5-3 hours). Taxis are available at the airport (negotiate fares or choose pre-fixed rates).
By Public Transport: You can take a bus from Kannur Airport to Kannur city center., then transfer to a bus towards Kanhangad. Inform the conductor about Ranipuram (near Kanhangad) and take a local bus or auto-rickshaw from there.
