Tucked away in the peaceful hills of Bheemanady, the Natural Cave Koovapara is a reminder of the geological and historical diversity of the area. Even with its somewhat mysterious name—”Natural Cave” is still an intriguing but uncomplicated moniker—Koovapara has grown to be a well-liked travel destination for both nature lovers and adventure seekers.

The Journey of Discovery

It’s an interesting tale of how Koovapara went from being a little-known natural wonder to a popular tourist destination. Punam was intended to be grown by the Nileswar settlers who moved to the Bheemanady highlands in the past. Since they had no access to natural water sources, they cleverly gathered rainfall in clay pots for everyday purposes and irrigation. The property Reform Act of the 1960s and 1970s altered the dynamics of property ownership over time, enabling Kuruncherry resident K. Kunhambu to buy 1.4 hectares of land, which contained the cave.

Unintentionally increasing its accessibility, Kunhambu erected a water pump for irrigation inside the cave in 1984. The paved Kuruncherry-Koovapara-Chembankunnu block road greatly increased accessibility to the cave and brought in an influx of tourists. 2018 marked the last turning point when, with funding from KTDC and BRDC, the cave underwent a total rehabilitation that included new pathways and staircases. The cave has since welcomed tourists from both domestic and foreign locations.
