This area, Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is located near the Karnataka border and is a component of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary., which is to the north of Wayanad district, is home to a wide variety of plants. Open for wildlife jeep safari twice a day, the 1.5–2 hour ride guarantees you will see a variety of animals and bird species in their native habitat. The main draw here is a lake where animals congregate to drink. The forests are made up of a variety of forest types, including semi-evergreen forest patches, bamboo and long, prickly ginger bushes, and tropical damp, dry deciduous forests.

Approximately one-third of the sanctuary is covered in teak, eucalyptus, silver oak, and rosewood plantations. These woodlands have been known to regularly glimpse elephant herds, deer, big cats, panthers, tigers, langurs, bonnet macaques, bison, sambar deer, Malabar squirrels, bears, and the uncommon Slender Loris. Fact: The first international biosphere reserve in India, the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, is home to both Muthanga and Tholpetty.
